Stunning American Flag Cake: 3 Steps to a Perfect Patriotic Treat

  • Author: ushinzomr

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • Red and blue food coloring
  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • Fresh strawberries, sliced
  • Fresh blueberries

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk. Begin and end with the flour mixture. Mix until just combined.
  6. Divide the batter evenly into three bowls. Leave one bowl plain, add red food coloring to the second bowl, and blue food coloring to the third bowl. Mix until desired colors are achieved.
  7. Pour the red batter into one prepared cake pan and the blue batter into the other. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to wire racks to cool completely.
  9. While the cakes cool, whip the heavy cream with powdered sugar until soft peaks form.
  10. Once the cakes are completely cooled, place the blue cake layer on a serving platter. Spread a layer of whipped cream on top, then add the red cake layer.
  11. Frost the top and sides of the cake with the remaining whipped cream.
  12. Decorate the top of the cake with sliced strawberries to create the stripes and blueberries for the stars, mimicking the American flag.
  13. Chill the cake in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before serving to allow the whipped cream to set.
