Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup whole milk
- 3 large eggs
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 3 cups buttercream frosting (store-bought or homemade)
- Food coloring (in school colors)
- Graduation-themed decorations (edible or non-edible)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans and smooth the tops.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
- Once cooled, level the cakes with a knife if necessary. Place one layer on a serving plate and spread a layer of frosting on top.
- Place the second cake layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake with the remaining buttercream frosting.
- Add food coloring to the frosting if desired to match school colors, and decorate with graduation-themed decorations.
- Slice and serve at the graduation party, and enjoy!
Notes
- For a fun twist, consider adding chocolate chips or sprinkles to the batter.
- You can customize the cake with different flavors, such as chocolate or vanilla, depending on your preference.
- Make sure to allow the cake to cool completely before frosting to avoid melting the frosting.
