- 2 1/2 cups All-purpose flour
- 2 cups Granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon Baking powder
- 1 teaspoon Salt
- 1 cup Unsalted butter, softened
- 4 large Eggs
- 2 teaspoons Vanilla extract
- 1 cup Milk
- 4 cups Buttercream frosting
- for decoration Fondant (optional)
- for decoration Food coloring (optional)
- as needed Graduation-themed decorations
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large bowl, mix together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- Add the softened butter and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Add the eggs, vanilla extract, and milk to the dry ingredients. Beat on medium speed for about 2 minutes until smooth.
- Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove from the pans and cool completely on wire racks.
- Once cooled, frost the top of one cake layer with buttercream frosting, then place the second layer on top.
- Frost the top and sides of the cake with the remaining buttercream frosting.
- Decorate with fondant, food coloring, and graduation-themed decorations as desired.
Notes
- For a chocolate graduation cake, substitute 1 cup of flour with cocoa powder.
- You can make the cake a day in advance and store it in the refrigerator, tightly wrapped.
- Feel free to customize the colors of the frosting and decorations to match the graduate’s school colors.
