Ingredients

  • 2 cups Cake Flour
  • 1 ½ cups Granulated Sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Baking Powder
  • ½ teaspoon Salt
  • ½ cup Unsalted Butter, softened
  • 3 large Eggs
  • 2 teaspoons Vanilla Extract
  • 1 cup Milk
  • 4 cups Buttercream Frosting
  • as needed Food Coloring (optional)
  • as needed Graduation Decorations (cap, diploma, etc.)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cake flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Add the softened butter and mix until crumbly.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, vanilla extract, and milk.
  5. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry mixture and mix until smooth.
  6. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans and smooth the tops.
  7. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
  9. Once cooled, level the tops of the cakes with a knife if necessary.
  10. Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread a layer of buttercream frosting on top.
  11. Add the second layer of cake and frost the top and sides with the remaining buttercream.
  12. If desired, tint some of the buttercream with food coloring to create an aesthetic design.
  13. Decorate the cake with graduation-themed decorations such as a mini graduation cap and diploma.
  14. Slice and serve at your graduation celebration!
